Azim Aytbayev

Azim Aytbayevich Aytbayev — Candidate Master of Sports of the USSR in mountaineering, instructor, and Chief of the Rescue and Control Post of the Ala-Archa Mountaineering Camp. A graduate of the Przhevalsk mountaineering section, he began his climbing career in 1946. He was among the principal organisers of training events aimed at raising the athletic standards at the Ala-Archa camp.
He participated in ascents of peaks graded up to Category 5 of difficulty – the highest designation at the time – including the first ascent of Cherny Shpil Peak (4,315 m, 3B grade), the first traverse of the North Face of Box Peak (4,298 m, 4A), and the West Face route on Talgar Peak (4,979 m, 5B), along with numerous other notable climbs. In 1957, he commanded the rescue team during the mountaineering gathering, whose objective was the first ascent of Usechenka Peak (4,759 m, 4A).
